GLOSSARY OF TERMS

Below is included a glossary of initials and terms used in this work. The terms marked with an asterisk indicate my own definition formulated specifically for use in my research:

F.L.O - Police Family Liaison Officer

P.C.C - Press Complaints Commission

S.I.O - Senior Investigating Officer

V.S - Victim Support

Major Crime* - For this research I define major crime as murder, manslaughter or serious personal or sexual attack.

Media* - I define the Media as all outlets working in the public domain which transfer information and/or news to the public by all means including the written word, the broadcast word or by electronic means. This incorporates everything from newspapers and magazines, to television and radio and the Internet.

Tabloid* - A term originally used to describe the size of a newspaper but which today refers to a newspaper or journal which deals with news in a sensational manner.

Victims* - I use the word victim to describe those directly or indirectly affected by major crime. Obviously in the case of murder and manslaughter the direct victims are dead. I therefore define the term in these cases to include immediate members of the dead person's family. These family members are indirect victims as opposed to direct victims who are those subjected to serious attacks but whom are still alive.
